Frame skipping explained

A monitor running at 60 Hz is expected to present up to 60 refresh cycles each second. A 144 Hz monitor is expected to present up to 144. Frame skipping occurs when one or more expected frames are not displayed in sequence. The screen may still report 60 Hz or 144 Hz because the selected refresh mode and the frames actually shown are not always the same thing.

The symptom is easiest to see as an interruption in otherwise even motion. During a camera-assisted test, a healthy sequence usually produces evenly spaced markers. A repeated missing marker or larger gap can indicate that the display skipped part of the sequence.

A single uneven photo is not proof of a defective monitor. Camera shutter timing, browser scheduling, VRR, and system load can imitate the pattern. Repeat the capture before concluding.

Frame skipping is not the same as low FPS

Low FPS means the application or browser produces fewer frames. Frame skipping means the display path fails to present every expected frame. They can feel similar, but they point to different parts of the system.

What causes monitor frame skipping?

Frame skipping can come from the monitor, the connection, display settings, or the test environment. Common causes and look-alikes include:

  • An unstable or unsupported overclocked refresh rate.
  • A cable, adapter, dock, or display input that cannot reliably carry the selected mode.
  • Incorrect operating-system refresh-rate settings.
  • Variable refresh rate behavior during an inconsistent test workload.
  • Power-saving modes that throttle the browser or graphics path.
  • Browser frame scheduling delays while the tab is unfocused or the system is busy.
  • Camera exposure or rolling-shutter artifacts that resemble missing frames.

Because several causes produce similar evidence, diagnosis should be comparative. Test the same display at its standard refresh rate, repeat at the problematic rate, and change only one setting at a time.

How to test for frame skipping

  1. Confirm the intended refresh rate in your operating-system display settings.
  2. Close heavy applications and keep the browser tab focused.
  3. Open the online frame skipping test and start the moving pattern.
  4. Use fullscreen mode and allow the motion to stabilize.
  5. Take a camera photo using an exposure that captures several markers in one image.
  6. Repeat the photo and compare the spacing instead of relying on one capture.

Even spacing across repeated photos supports consistent frame presentation. Repeated missing markers or doubled gaps deserve further testing. Random bands or gaps that change completely from photo to photo are more likely to be camera or timing artifacts.

How to interpret a suspicious result

Repeat at the standard refresh rate

If skipping appears only at an overclocked or high-bandwidth mode, return to the monitor's standard mode. A clean result there narrows the problem to the higher refresh configuration.

Change the connection path

Test a direct cable connection where possible. Remove adapters or docks temporarily, try another supported input, and avoid changing several variables at once.

Separate browser timing from display behavior

Run the refresh rate testand the browser FPS test. Unstable browser frame time can affect the moving pattern without proving that the monitor itself drops frames.

When should you be concerned?

Investigate further when the same missing-frame pattern appears in repeated captures, across multiple browsers, and while the system is otherwise stable. The evidence is stronger if the issue follows one refresh mode or one display while another monitor remains clean on the same computer.

If the pattern disappears after changing the camera exposure, focusing the tab, or reducing system load, the first capture was probably not enough to diagnose hardware. A frame skipping test is a troubleshooting aid, not a certified measurement or warranty decision.
